SCTCC Positive Effects of Micro Affirmations on The Classroom Project

Instructions

CREATE and Submit on D2L:

Imagine you serve on a “behavior committee” at your place of work that serves young children.  The school would like to start a new system for children to earn coupons that they can earn from teachers and save up to earn rewards.  You have a meeting tomorrow where each committee member will share their thoughts and ideas.  Create a response that gives the perspective on why this idea does not help motivate students and what you would suggest for a focus of this committee team instead.

You can write out your response, create a PowerPoint presentation (with extra notes with exactly what you will say), or make an audio or video recording of what you will say to the committee. Make sure it is an organized presentation of the information.

Elaborate on these 4 areas for your committee, in this order, and use these headings:

1. How and why this coupon method has been shown to not motivate students.

Provide at least 3 clear ways/reasons from the course material

Describe each

2. Resource.

Give them a resource they can look at

Describe the resource

This can be a class resource or a new one you’ve found.

3. Alternative suggestion.

Suggest your ideas for a focus instead.

State and describe at least one idea that is in line with the course content

3. Summary and Hope.

End with a summary and what is your hope for the committee’s work moving forward

Two last persuasive sentences

Show an understanding of the course material. Speak in your own words unless you quote and cite your source. Complete sentences. Organized product.

Part Two Affirmations

(Read – article)

After viewing the resource you signed up for HERE while reading the course content, create your post to review:

List your resource and topic

Explain to us what this resource is about and some of the main points.

Answer one or more of these related to your resource: Tell us how found uses of intrinsic motivation in their suggestions. Summarize or list the main points you think are important in the motivation of students. What helps to motivate the students and/or would you suggest this resource to schools?  Why or why not? How is this resource related to what we are learning in this class module?

Introduction:

As a medical professor in charge of creating assignments and evaluating student performance, I understand the importance of finding effective methods to motivate students. In this response to the behavior committee, I will explain why the coupon method may not be an effective way to motivate students and provide an alternative suggestion that aligns with the course content. Additionally, I will offer a resource that the committee can refer to for further information on student motivation.

1. How and why this coupon method has been shown to not motivate students:

a) Extrinsic motivation diminishes intrinsic motivation: Research has shown that when students are motivated solely by external rewards, such as coupons, their intrinsic motivation to learn can decrease. By focusing on the rewards rather than the joy of learning, students may become less engaged and lose interest in the learning process.

b) Unrealistic expectations and external pressure: The implementation of a coupon system may create unrealistic expectations and external pressure for students to perform. This can lead to stress and anxiety, which are known to hinder motivation and hinder academic achievement.

c) Overemphasis on rewards diminishes the value of education: When learning is tied solely to rewards, the intrinsic value of education may be undermined. Students may begin to view learning as a means to earn coupons or rewards, rather than valuing the knowledge and skills gained through the educational process.

2. Resource:

I would recommend the committee to refer to the book “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us” by Daniel H. Pink. This book explores the concept of intrinsic motivation and provides insights into effective motivational strategies.

In “Drive,” Pink argues that traditional external rewards, such as coupons, are not effective in motivating individuals in the long run. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of intrinsic motivation, which is driven by autonomy, mastery, and purpose. By focusing on these intrinsic motivators, educators can foster a genuine passion for learning and encourage students to take ownership of their educational journey.

3. Alternative suggestion:

Instead of relying solely on external rewards, the committee should consider implementing strategies that promote intrinsic motivation. One idea is to create a positive and supportive learning environment where students feel empowered and motivated to learn. This can be achieved by providing opportunities for student autonomy, encouraging mastery through challenging yet attainable tasks, and fostering a sense of purpose by connecting learning to real-life applications and personal goals.

By focusing on intrinsic motivation, the committee can instill a lifelong love for learning in students, which will benefit their academic success and personal development.

4. Summary and Hope:

In conclusion, while the coupon method may seem like a simple solution to motivate students, research suggests that it may not be an effective strategy in the long run. By understanding the importance of intrinsic motivation and implementing strategies based on autonomy, mastery, and purpose, the committee has the opportunity to create a learning environment that truly inspires students to love learning. My hope for the committee’s work moving forward is that they prioritize intrinsic motivation and explore innovative approaches to engage and motivate students.

By embracing the concepts discussed in the course materials and looking for inspiration in books like “Drive,” the committee can make a positive impact on student motivation and ultimately enhance the educational experience. Let us shift our focus from external rewards to nurturing students’ intrinsic motivation, and together, we can create a learning environment that fosters lifelong learners.
