Identify a task that you would need to perform in your current career or
future career, and explain how you would apply the knowledge you have learned
in this course to succeed at performing the task in a real-word scenario.Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or
          citations are necessary.

        4. Unit VIII PowerPoint Presentation

          Instructions

The industrial plant where you work is expanding its operations and building
a facility that will employ 200 new workers. Management has tasked you with
creating a training program for the new workers. They want you to investigate a
specific hazard or safety topic and create a PowerPoint presentation
explaining the hazard/topic and how you will handle training the employees.
Choose one of the following hazards/topics and prepare a PowerPoint
          presentation for management:

          • hearing protection;
          • the use of half-mask air purifying respirators (APRs);
          • lock-out/tag-out of a hydraulic press; or
          • HazCom for a location that just uses acetone, toluene, and isopropyl
            alcohol.

As part of this scenario, you are free to include additional details about
the hazard/topic you choose. For instance, if you choose hearing protection,
you can include information about the manufacturing equipment and the decibel
levels in the area. Include the following components in your PowerPoint
          presentation.

          • Evaluate the hazard, and discuss any regulations pertaining to the
            hazard/environment.
          • Explain any additional hazard abatement strategies and safety and health
management strategies that were taken to mitigate the effects of the
            hazard (e.g., substitution, engineering controls).
          • Prepare a brief description of steps you will take to involve the students
            in the training.
          • Discuss if you will use any hands-on training and how you will perform the
hands-on training if you use it.
Create two slides that you will
use in your actual training program with employees. Explain these to
management to convince them that the training is beneficial.
          • Discuss how managers will play a role in the effectiveness of training and
how leadership is necessary to help get employee buy-in for the
            training.
          • Discuss how you will evaluate the effectiveness of the training.

Use the speaker notes section to explain the material that you present on
each of the slides.Your PowerPoint presentation should be a minimum of 10 slides, not counting
the title and reference slides. You are required to use at least two outside
sources, one of which must come from the CSU Online Library. All sources used,
including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material
          must have accompanying APA citations.

Introduction:

As a medical professor, my main responsibilities include designing and conducting lectures, evaluating student performance and providing feedback through examinations and assignments. In this task, I will answer some questions related to safety management in a manufacturing environment. In addition, I will provide a solution to a workplace hazard through a PowerPoint presentation that demonstrates the importance of safety training for new employees.

Answer to Question 1:

If I were the safety manager in a manufacturing environment, the hazard assessment tool that I would recommend for identifying hazards and assessing risk is the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) method. This tool focuses on specific job tasks and breaks them down into a step-by-step format to identify potential hazards. The JSA involves observing workers perform the task and identifying potential hazards during each step of the task. This tool is effective as it not only identifies hazards but also provides safety measures that can be taken to prevent injuries.

I would recommend this method over others because it involves the participation of workers in identifying hazards and potential solutions. When workers are involved in the process, they feel more empowered and are more likely to adhere to safety guidelines. This method also ensures that all jobs are analyzed in a consistent manner, which reduces the risk of missing hazards.

Answer to Question 2:

Management participation is critical in promoting safety in the workplace. It is because managers are responsible for creating a safe work environment and ensuring that workers have the necessary tools and training to perform their jobs safely. Managers can also lead by example, reinforcing the importance of safety to their team.

To increase management participation in promoting safety, I would recommend conducting safety training sessions for managers and assigning them safety-related tasks. For example, a manager could be assigned the responsibility of conducting a thorough inspection of the facility every quarter or have an assigned role in the safety committee. These tasks would encourage managers to take a more active role in promoting safety.

Answer to Question 3:

A preliminary hazard analysis is conducted during the initial stages of a project. It is a high-level review of potential hazards associated with the project. In contrast, a detailed hazard analysis is performed during the execution phase of the project. It involves a more in-depth review of each step of the job task to identify and mitigate potential hazards.

A preliminary hazard analysis is appropriate when assessing risks in the early stages of a project and when little information is available. It is also used when preparing the project scope. A detailed hazard analysis is more appropriate when executing a project and when detailed information is available.

Answer to Question 4:

Safety culture is a set of shared values, beliefs, and attitudes that shape an organization’s commitment to safety. To develop a participative culture in the workplace, I would recommend encouraging open communication between employees, instilling a sense of trust, and offering opportunities for employees to participate in safety decisions.

Encouraging open communication involves listening to employees’ concerns and taking swift action to address issues that arise. Trust is built by having consistent and transparent safety procedures, including those that are communicated to employees. Offering employees opportunities to participate in safety initiatives or serve on a safety committee is also essential to building a participative culture.

Answer to Unit Journal VIII:

As a medical professor, I would need to design and conduct lectures regularly. The knowledge I have learned in the course would be useful in preparing and delivering effective lectures. I have learned about the importance of creating a participative culture and involving students in the learning process. I have also learned about the use of effective communication strategies to ensure that students understand the material.

To perform this task successfully, I would apply the knowledge I have learned in the course regarding effective communication and learning strategies. I would ensure that my lectures are interactive, engaging, and relevant to the students. I would also make sure that they have access to additional resources, such as readings and study guides, to support their learning.

Answer to Unit VIII PowerPoint Presentation:

As a safety manager, I would choose the use of half-mask air purifying respirators as the hazard/topic to investigate and create a PowerPoint presentation for management. The following components would be included in the PowerPoint:

1. Evaluate the hazard, discussing the regulations associated with the hazard.
2. Explain any additional hazard abatement strategies and safety and health management strategies that were taken to mitigate the effects of the hazard.
3. Prepare a brief description of the steps that the employees will take to participate in the training process.
4. Discuss the hands-on training that will be offered to employees, and explain the steps to be taken to perform the hands-on training.
5. Create two slides to be used in the actual training program to demonstrate its effectiveness to management.
6. Discuss the importance of management leadership in the effectiveness of safety training.
7. Discuss the measures that would be used to evaluate the effectiveness of training.

The PowerPoint presentation should be interactive, informative, and engaging, with the appropriate use of images and graphics. The use of external sources, such as scientific studies or reputable websites, should be used to support the material presented. The speaker notes section should explain what is on every slide in detail for the trainer who will be giving the presentation.
