Mechanical Hazards and Evaluation of The Acceptability of The Risk Paper

Instructions

Choose one mechanical hazard and one fall hazard. The hazards can be from a
workplace you are familiar with, from the textbook, or from an article you find
in the CSU Online Library. Create a paper containing two parts. The first part
will be for the mechanical hazard, and the second part will be for the fall
hazard. Complete the following elements for each part of your paper:

  • Describe the processes that create the hazard.
  • Perform a risk assessment using a risk-assessment matrix or a
risk-assessment decision tree. Explain the steps required to perform the risk
assessment. You can choose a matrix or tree that was covered in the
lesson or textbook, or create your own. The risk assessment should be
based on the assumption that no controls have been installed to date.
  • Evaluate the acceptability of the risk based on your risk assessment.
  • Recommend any controls that you believe would reduce the risk associated
    with the hazard.
  • Perform a second risk assessment based on your recommended
    controls.

Your completed assignment should be a minimum of three pages in length, not
counting the title and reference pages. You are required to use at least two
outside sources, one of which must come from the CSU Online Library. All
sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and
quoted material must have accompanying APA citations.

Introduction:
The assignment is designed to assess the student’s ability to identify, evaluate, and recommend control measures for mechanical and fall hazards. The student is required to describe the processes that create the hazard, perform a risk assessment, and evaluate the acceptability of the risk. Additionally, the student must recommend control measures and perform a second risk assessment based on the recommended controls.

Answer:
For the mechanical hazard, I have chosen to evaluate the hazard associated with using a lathe machine in a manufacturing facility. The processes that create the hazard include operating the machine without proper training or safety knowledge or failing to use the appropriate personal protective equipment. Additionally, the hazard can be created when the machine is not properly maintained, leading to malfunctioning of components or failure to stop the machine.

To perform a risk assessment, I would start by identifying the potential hazards associated with using a lathe machine. Next, I would assess the likelihood of the hazard occurring and the severity of the consequences. Based on these assessments, I would use a risk-assessment matrix to determine the level of risk associated with the hazard. The matrix would be divided into three categories: low risk, medium risk, and high risk.

Based on my assessment, the hazard associated with using a lathe machine would be categorized as a high-risk hazard. This is due to the potential for severe injury or fatality associated with the hazard. To reduce the risk associated with the hazard, I would recommend several control measures. These include ensuring that all operators have completed proper training and have a good understanding of the hazards associated with the machine, using personal protective equipment, maintaining the machine according to the manufacturer’s specifications, and providing adequate supervision to ensure safety protocols are being followed.

I would then perform a second risk assessment based on these recommended controls. This assessment would involve reassessing the likelihood and severity of the hazard occurring after the implementation of the control measures. I would expect to see a reduction in the level of risk associated with the hazard after implementing these control measures.
