Introduction:

In this assignment, two different questions are given to answer. The first one concerns “Repeal Obamacare?” and focuses on the politics and strategies of the healthcare sector. On the other hand, the second question is about leadership styles in healthcare and asks to reflect on the leadership compass assessment. In both questions, it is required to use at least three peer-reviewed journal articles or qualified text published within the past five years and follow the APA Manual 6th or 7th editions scholarly writing guidelines.

1. Repeal Obamacare?

1a. Why does politics have such an important impact on strategy in the healthcare sector?

Politics has a significant impact on healthcare strategy due to several reasons. Firstly, healthcare policies are deeply interlinked with government decisions as most of the healthcare expenditures are funded by public money. Therefore, any changes in healthcare policies can have a direct impact on the funding, delivery, and accessibility of healthcare services. Secondly, politics can affect the healthcare sector through its regulatory authority. Federal, state, and local governments have different regulations that may change frequently, and healthcare organizations have to comply with them. For example, under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), increased regulatory burden caused by fines and penalties affected healthcare organizations adversely. Thirdly, politics affects healthcare strategies by creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and distrust among stakeholders. For example, when President Trump announced his plan to repeal ACA, healthcare providers were concerned about the reimbursement policies and funding provisions.

1b. Why were healthcare organizations merging under the ACA? Why might these strategies have needed to be revisited under a Trump administration?

Healthcare organizations were merging under ACA to meet the challenges posed by the legislation. ACA introduced a value-based reimbursement system that relied on clinical outcomes, quality measures, and patient satisfaction, unlike the earlier fee-for-service model. Therefore, to achieve better outcomes, healthcare organizations started to merge, integrate, and form partnerships. By doing so, they could pool resources, optimize care delivery, and achieve economies of scale. However, these strategies needed to be revisited under the Trump administration because of its intention to repeal ACA. Healthcare providers feared that the repeal would lead to a loss of coverage for millions of Americans and would disrupt their internal operations. The proposed Trump plan lacked clarity and had uncertainties, causing panic among healthcare providers.

1c. How does this case demonstrate the difficulty in only having a prospective strategy?

The case demonstrates the difficulty in having only a prospective strategy as healthcare policies are highly volatile and can change from one administration to another. A prospective strategy assumes that an organization can predict future scenarios and develop a framework to address them. However, in the healthcare sector, political interference can drastically alter the policy environment or create a void in it. As a result, healthcare organizations can face disruptions and uncertainties that can significantly impact their financial stability and operations. Therefore, having only a prospective strategy may not be sufficient in an environment where the policy shift can be abrupt and unpredictable.

2. Leadership in Healthcare:

2a. Which of the four directions do you believe is your style? What are the strengths of your style? (at least four adjectives) What are the limitations of your style? (at least four adjectives) Which style do you find the most difficult to work with, and why? What do the other directions need to know about you so that you can work effectively together?

Based on the Leadership Compass self-assessment, I identify as a west-oriented leader. The strengths of this leadership style are that they are visionary, strategic, focused, and results-oriented. West leaders can set goals, develop strategies, and maintain a high level of commitment to their work. However, limitations of this leadership style include a lack of empathy, rigid thinking, resistance to change, and risk-taking. West leaders can sometimes act autocratically, ignoring the opinions and feedback of others, which can lead to conflicts. The leadership style that I find the most difficult to work with is predominantly south as it tends to prioritize building relationships and avoiding confrontations. West leaders need to understand that relationships are vital in achieving objectives and interpret feedback constructively rather than defensively.

2b. As the Chief Operating Officer at the Local Hospital in charge of the disaster response. In which ways would your leadership style be beneficial? In which ways could your leadership style be a detriment? And finally, what ways do you need to develop as a leader to adequately lead a disaster response?

As a west-oriented leader, I can be an asset in a disaster response situation as I am result-oriented, can make quick decisions, and can be proactive in problem-solving. During a disaster, it is essential to have a clear goal and determination to achieve it, and my leadership style can provide the necessary drive and focus. However, my leadership style can also be a detriment as I can be resistant to change and autocratic.

To effectively lead a disaster response, I need to develop my leadership skills in building relationships, teamwork, and empathy. It is essential to have the ability to work with people from different backgrounds and perspectives in a disaster situation and understand their emotional needs. Therefore, it is necessary to develop leadership styles that prioritize the emotions of others and foster cohesiveness within the team. Developing my skills in emotional intelligence, communication, and team building can help me lead a disaster response effectively.
